Col. Kenneth Nielsen

Colonel Kenneth Nielsen was born May 1, 1945 in Astoria, New York and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1965. He worked as a digital computer repairman for the Air Defense Command. He served in the continental US and reached the rank of Sergeant when he was discharged in 1969.

He enlisted in the California Army National Guard in 1975 and graduated from the California Officer Candidate School in 1977. He branch qualified in the Ordinance Corp in 1978 and served as Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Company Commander in a Heavy Maintenance Company.

He returned to active duty in 1984 and served tours as Plans Officer at the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon, as Assistant Inspector General at the Office of the Adjutant General in California and as Plans, Operations and Training Officer at various headquarters. He performed overseas duty assignments in Belgium, Germany and the Ukraine.

He retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1999 and joined the California State Military Reserve in 2000 at the rank of Colonel. He is presently the Commander of the California Center for Military History in  Sacramento, California. His hobby is the study of WWII history including the use of War Dogs.
